SPC Enters in Social Responsibility Ranking List
The 2012 Ranking List of Corporate Social Responsibility sponsored by Fortune China has been unveiled recently. SINOPEC Shanghai Petrochemical Co. Ltd. (SPC) ranked the 32nd as one of the four Chinese enterprises (including China Petrochemical Corporation, China National Petroleum Corporation and China National Offshore Oil Corporation) in the oil and gas industry that entered the list.
The Ranking List of Corporate Social Responsibility is a ranking system for social responsibilities of leading professional enterprises well-known in various sectors in China. The enterprises entering the list are ranked according to their final scores accumulatively calculated on the basis of 40 secondary standards and 139 evaluation indicators in a quantitative and weighted way in terms of environmental protection, public benefit activities and corporate governance. The information for appraisal comes from the enterprises’ publicly disclosed information including their financial reports, social responsibility reports, official websites, policies and documents, news articles and so on.
This year, a total of eight companies in the oil and gas field, four foreign-funded enterprises and four Chinese ones, have entered the list. In recent years, SPC, as a petrochemical enterprise with a 40-year history, has been propelling the industrial restructuring and the product quality upgrading to improve the efficiency in resource utilization by dint of ceaseless technical innovation and application. Besides, SPC has attached importance to clean production, which has gradually eliminated the odor produced when normal production and operation are underway in the working areas. Thus, SPC was awarded the title of “China’s Eco-friendly Enterprise” in 2010. In addition, SPC actively promoted the method of HAZOP (Hazard and Operability Analysis) to guarantee the production safety.
In 2011, as for energy saving and emission reduction, SPC consumed 0.998 ton of standard coals for one thousand output value, decreasing by 5.31% compared with 1.054 tons of standard coals for one thousand output value in 2010 and saving 410,768 tons of standard coals. It used 58,069,200 tons of water for production, down by 3,446,600 tons or 5.60% compared with 61,515,800 tons in 2010. Moreover, the reutilization rate of industrial water reached 96.84% while the total volumes of COD, solid waste and industrial waste water emissions dropped by 16%, 10.8% and 13.8% respectively. The discharge of waste water and the treatment of hazardous wastes both met the requirements for the assessment of environmental protection. The average thermal efficiency of heating furnaces reached 91.45%, with a year-on-year increase of 0.2 percentage point.
Furthermore, SPC took an active part in public-welfare activities, upheld and improved the system of corporate democratic management with the employee representative meeting as the basic form, and probed into new forms and methods of democratic management in line with the actual conditions of a state-controlled enterprise. In 2011, SPC won the 3rd crown of “National Model Unit” in a row and the title of “National Model Enterprise with Harmonious Labor Relation”, and ranked the fifth in the list of “Top 100 Shanghai-based Enterprises for Tax Payment in 2011”.
